How to keep your PC running Smooth: Part 1
I want to start this blog out with a little story someone once told me. They would get up in the morning, turn on their computer, fire up their email and then proceed to make breakfast; complete with coffee, eggs and bacon. They’d go outside, pickup the paper, finish cooking, start eating and reading the paper. When this person was done with their morning routine, their inbox was ready for reading, and by the way, the message you finally got from this person more than likely took longer than registering a vehicle at a state office. I hope this isn’t you, and if it is, I thought I could give you some tips on how to keep your computer runnin’ smooth.
First and this is a problem I don’t mind seeing and can understand --> the problem being- when I go inspect a computer that’s crawlin’, I see tons! Tons! TOns! TONs! TONS Of applications and software that the user does not use!
Let’s pause for a second so I can give you an example of how I keep my PC’s clear. I have an old dell computer with Microsoft XP; my own personal HP notebook with windows7 which is brand new, and another one running a Linux operating system on an old J&J that can date probably back to the 90’s. They are faster and more efficient than anything I’ve seen with some major specs- only because I take care of my machines. Allow me to let you in on a million dollar secret.
I have a 250GB drive on my notebook. I have 153Gigs free, and I plan to free up more space soon, in another words I don’t save anything I really need or applications, downloads and software that I can’t save too an external drive. Anything I save on my laptop must stay on my laptop. The more I save, the slower my computer works. So I avoid filling the drive.
On another note, I avoid anything that might load to my browser.
Check this out, a lot of applications on facebook and many popular downloads that will remain nameless count on you the user to click on the agreement which says that the malware and spyware they are about to put on your computer is ok! All those extra browser applications are viruses in a sense and are legal viruses! That you agreed on. SOCIAL HACKING 101! So you may want to think twice when you want to be a cartoon, Play Farmville, be a Mafioso or even just IM someone. I’m sorry but the legal security experts are sending bots through facebook and IM messages constantly-legally by the way-. You may think you are having a conversation with a friend and in reality you’re talking to a program! These bots are pretty extensive in what they do; they’re always very surprising and super interesting to read about. I guess they do it mainly to show what’s possible, because it sounds like they do a lot of this on their own time, I’m sure It’s pretty funny to them when they trick someone one with Security Certifications listed in their info (sounds like a cruel joke huh). But keep in mind when the bad guys do it, it’s much, much more cruel, and they don’t let anyone know about it willingly.
It’s good to keep in mind the security guys do it to find flaws within a system in order to patch it, before somebody exploits the flaw for the wrong reasons. That’s not to say there aren’t other possible flaws to be found.
To be continued…
