As an artist that cites Celia Cruz and Willy Chirino as sources of inspiration for his music, Pitbull has become one of the most well known latino artists globally. Even though he had a rough start he has been able to achieve his dreams and become wildly successful as a rapper!
Born on January 15 1981, Armando Perez, better known as Pitbull comes from a Cuban family living in Miami. He expressed a desire to be a rapper since an early age and worked to become one. His first recording was with Lil Jon, with whom he created a song for the album Kings of Crunk in 2002. This was his first introduction as a performer on a national scence.
Even though it was a small participation it still led him to pursue a career as a performer. He released his debut album in 2004. Titled M.I.A.M.I (short for “Money Is A Major Issue”) it was produced under TVT Records.
This first album did not become much known, but it did lead Pitbull to create more albums. In his fourth Rebelution, Pitbull included “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)”. This song finally pushed him into fame. It is still played at parties today.
Success, however, did not come easy for him. Armando had a rough start in his life. Pitbull was estranged from his father when he was still a young boy in Miami. His mom was the primary breadwinner in the house. She worked as a house cleaner; telemarketer, and manager at Burger King. Pitbull became a small-time drug dealer when he was 16. He was able to reform himself after his mother kicked him out of the house. After that he attended South Miami Senior High School. At the high school he started rapping and challenging his classmates with a rebuttal about his white looks and blue eyes. He boasts even to this day about how he came up with the name ‘Pitbull’ and the reason he kept the name. He says it is because "in dog fights, pit bulls are too stupid to lose." After graduating from the high school he focused full time on his career in rapping.
His path could have taken a dark turn, but his dream of music helped push him along. Today he is one of the most known producers and rappers of his age. The Miami Dolphins wanted him to create a new fight song for them, and he was even granted the Miami “Key to the City” on August 19, 2009.
His tie to Miami led him to release English songs only. On November 2, 2010, however, he created a debut album in Spanish. It was called Armando which did not make him stand out among Latin stars or carry him to fame
In spite of this his most famous recordings are in English. His 2011 album Planet Pit introduced “Give Me Everything”, one of his most famous songs. Shortly after this song’s release it became the number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. The song eventually reached #1 worldwide.
He has been tapped by several artists like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Britney Spears to participate in recordings or remixes of their songs. He has been able to develop connections with many of the prominent singers and songwriters these days and he will probably not stop, no matter how many difficulties he comes against. Critics has called him a one-or-two club hit wonder boy but by producing one hit after another and working with variety of famous artists he has become a global pop culture icon!
