Underworld: Awakening is the second sequel in the Underworld series (with Underworld: Rise of the Lycans being the prequel to the first film Underworld and Underworld: Evolution being the first sequel). Six months after the events of Underworld: Evolution, vampire warrioress Selene (Kate Beckinsale) was captured by humans. Eventually both government officials and the public learn about the existence of the two immortal species of Vampires and Lycans (werewolves). A crusade and all-out war has begun: study and eradicate. After being imprisoned in cryogenic suspension for 12 years, Selene manages to escape the facility to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. This movie is unlike any in earlier Underworld series.
