From the mastermind who brought us Marie Antoinette comes this year’s teen sensation The Bling Ring, starring Emma Watson. Based on a Vanity Fair article, “The Suspects Wore Loboutins” by Nancy Jo Sales, the movie was directed by the talented Sofia Coppola. The “bling ring robberies” were real crimes committed by real teenagers with high-profile victims that included Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsey Lohan. The teens researched the whereabouts of the celebrities on the internet then robbed their homes while they were away. Eventually the group was arrested, but their fame lived on with their admirers.
The movie presents the robberies from a creative perspective and includes special appearances from Kirsten Dunst and Paris Hilton. A young woman herself, Coppola is able to portray a story based on real events in a way that will certainly enchant teenagers. The beautiful Emma Watson portrays Nicki, one of the robbers. I have to say she does an incredible job. Though she’s well-known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies, Watson takes her acting to a whole new level in this role. Some audiences found the movie boring. They called it just another “teen gone wild movie”. In my view, however, Coppola is able to find creative new ways to tell this story.
